Baybay & Baybee: Week 47 (6/27-7/3)

47 weeks old!

A lot happened this week, but the biggest thing is that Maya and Ella have been consistently sleeping through the night! The change started last Monday evening. I was home alone while Brett was at Scrabble Club. The girls were sleeping, and Ella woke up 45 minutes after they went to sleep, which is something that often happens. Normally, we go get them when they cry and I nurse or we walk around to help them back to sleep.

Well, this time, Ella's crying woke up Maya and since I couldn't easily help both girls at once, I decided to let them cry for a little while to see if they could get themselves back to sleep. I put Ella back down, gave them both kisses and told them what I was doing - that I would be right outside the room if they needed me, but that I knew they could get themselves back to sleep. Then I left the room. They cried. After 5 minutes I went back in and reassured them, but didn't pick them up. Maya cried for a total of 10 minutes and then fell asleep. Ella kept crying on and off for about 20 minutes. I went back in a couple times to reassure her during that time. After 20 minutes (which was as long as I could stand it) I picked her up and nursed her. She fell asleep and I put her back in her bed.

We have continued with the idea of letting them cry/fuss through the night when they woke, going in once or twice only to comfort them for a short time. It was very difficult to hear them cry, but they did catch on and figure out how to get back to sleep by themselves after a few days. We did the same thing for naps and it has made an amazing difference for everyone. We now put the girls down, give them their pacifiers and say, "Have a good rest, we love you!" and they GO TO SLEEP!

Our new set-up in the babies' room.

Maya sleeps.

Ella sleeps. The first few days in the new beds, Ella would fall asleep sitting up! Fortunately, by the end of the week (most of the time) she started laying down before she fell asleep. This is her usual position: with a pacifier in the mouth, pacifier in her hand and purple doggie tucked under her arm.

In other news, Maya is really getting into walking! It's so great to see her excited about moving around by herself. A fun game for all of us this week was, "Walk to Mama"/"Walk to Dada!" again, and again and again.

Yay, Maya!

We had a nice visit with our friends Dan, Darlene and Lydia at Look Park. We had planned to ride the tandem there, but Maya was having none of going in the trailer, so we ended up driving. A big congratulations and welcome to Emily, the newest member of the Buttrick family, born just a few weeks after this picture was taken!

We had a very fun afternoon on Friday playing at our neighbor Chrissi's house. Maya and Ella loved the kiddy pool, watching the other kids, and the sprinkler.

Ella says 'hi' to friends, Sia and her daughter, Josephine, at the neighborhood play group.

It's corn season!

Delicious!

The big tree in our next-door neighbor's yard was taken down this week. There were a lot of big trucks and chainsaws involved. We had a good time watching.

Playing outside with Grandma Kathy.

Sharing toys with herself.

Maya and Ella are very good at strewing their toys all over the floor.

The backyard flower garden is beautiful right now! We have been spending a lot of time with the babies in the swings enjoying the flowers and black raspberries.

My Canada Lily buds get bigger every day!

Coreopsis and Black-Eyed Susans.

Purple Echinacea blooms opening.

Black raspberries!

Two happy babies eating black raspberries.

Bonus video! Eating and swinging.
